NY Times

Thanks to the New York Times for including us as the “stylish” coffee & pastry stop in their 36 hours on the Central Coast article!  We are proud and honored to be a part of such an amazing small business community here in San Luis Obispo, and just think there’s no better place to live and work.  And if you find yourself visiting the Central Coast this summer, we’d love to take care of you while you’re here!

Here’s a link to the article.

Limekiln

We used to take as many backpacking trips into the High Sierra as we could manage each year from late spring to fall.  But with Scout and HoneyCo both still relatively new, along with our 2 little girls (Lilly 3, Everly 4 months), we decided it might be a good idea to get out and do some car camping over the next few years.

Last weekend, we had a chance to get a quick trip in, so we went up to Limekiln on the Big Sur coast for 2 nights in the redwoods.  We met up with some of our good friends from Verve, and Sara’s long lost high school friends from Ohio!  We all drank tons of coffee, made lots of great food on the camp stoves, had a hungry skunk visit camp while we were all hanging out by the fire, and somehow even made it up the trail to see the waterfalls with the little ones. A successful trip all around, and just really amazing to live in SLO where we can get to a place like Big Sur in under 2 hours on one of the most scenic drives you can make.

Costa Rica

I spent some time visiting some of our producers in Costa Rica a few months ago — here are a few photos from that trip.  We are fortunate to work with some really great coffee farmers, and it was great to see the farms, mills, and people responsible for some of the great coffees we get to enjoy here at Scout.

Scout Ride

Last week we put together a Saturday morning mountain bike ride, and it really turned into a highlight of the week. We announced the ride on our Facebook page on Friday, and we had 11 riders turn out for coffee around 7:45am, followed by a ride up on Cuesta Grade.  We left Scout around 8:15 and climbed Stage Coach to Botanicals/Morning Glory before heading back down to town for total of about 20 miles and 2,500′ of climbing.

We are hoping to have a monthly standing ride back on the calendar in the near future.  Stay tuned here and on our Facebook and Instagram for details.

Barista Magazine

Barista Magazine is the big industry magazine for what we do here at Scout, so we were really excited that they wanted to do a write up about our start-up process and buildout.

Getting Close!

We are finally only about a week away from our open, and are so thankful to so many of you for your help and support.  We just hired our first round of staff and they are amazing… you are seriously going to love them!  We will be doing training all this week, and should be on track for a soft open early next week.  Once it’s all set, we’ll be sure to blast it out through the internets.

A special and very sincere thanks again to all who came out for the group interviews or sent in resumes online.  We’ve been amazed by the quantity and quality of everyone who applied, and wish we could hire everyone.  Thank you all.

Here’s a quick photo to bring our blog back to life.  After we get through the opening, we’ll post some before, during and after photos, and begin telling the story of our sustainable and repurposed materials throughout the store.  In the meantime, you can check our flickr page to see some before photos.

Thanks so much for stopping by — we look forward to seeing you all soon.

The Lumber Yard

Don Seawater is the lumber man in SLO — he owns Pacific Coast Lumber, and has a line on all the good stuff.  On a foggy morning a couple days ago, he showed us around his yard with our friends Ryck, Matt and Jenn who introduced us all. We went to PCL looking to find some lumber for building bar tops, table tops, an outdoor living wall, and to face the front of our bar.  We left blown away by the generosity and helpfulness of all of these people.  Stay tuned for some truly amazing wood work that will help make Scout such a great place to enjoy your coffee.  We can’t wait.
